ONDO LAND Ryuichi Sakamoto Tribute

A three-night tribute turns Kaze no Hiroba into a shoeless listening room overlooking Umeda.
JR West will host a three-night tribute to Ryuichi Sakamoto on the rooftop of Kaze no Hiroba (Wind Plaza). The event runs Sept. 17-19, with nightly film screenings, live music and DJ sets from 6pm to 10pm.
Organizers will turn the plaza into a shoeless listening space with floor cushions overlooking Umeda’s skyline. The event continues rain or shine, though organizers may cancel it in severe weather.
A Rare 4K Screening
The paid program’s centerpiece is a 4K restoration of Tokyo Melody Ryuichi Sakamoto, shot by France’s National Audiovisual Institute in Tokyo in May 1984. It’s a 62-minute documentary where the 32-year-old Sakamoto discusses his childhood and music. Clips include Yellow Magic Orchestra’s farewell concert and scenes from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.
A separate video of Sakamoto performing piano also screens each night.
Live Performance Collaborators
There will be live performance each night, featuring different artists.
- Sept. 17: Marihiko Hara, the Kyoto-based composer who scored Kokuho and writes stage music for Hideki Noda and Mirai Moriyama.
- Sept. 18: Opitope, an ambient duo pairing musicians Tomoyoshi Date and Chihei Hatakeyama, blending acoustic instruments with electronics.
- Sept. 19: AOKI takamasa, the Osaka-born electronic musician and DJ behind the 2001 album SILICOM.
Additional Free Areas and Raffle
A free area runs alongside the ticketed program each night. It includes short film screenings related to Sakamoto. A rooftop bar serves original cocktails inspired by his songs and career.
Organizers are running an Instagram raffle for KAGAMI+ tickets. Guests who follow ONDO LAND, VS. and commmons, then post an event story with a mention, qualify for entry. Full rules are on the organizers’ social media accounts.
A separate program, “Ryuichi Sakamoto & Tin Drum | KAGAMI+,” runs at VS. during the same period. It continues through Oct. 12, a short walk from Osaka Station.
