Australia’s viral participatory choir brings its one-night-only community singing event back to Tokyo

More than 1 million people have taken part in Pub Choir events across Australia and beyond, according to the organization. Now, the crowd-powered singing experience returns to Tokyo for one evening, turning everyone in the room into the performance rather than the audience.

Australian music educator Astrid Jorgensen leads the event with her trademark mix of humor, warmth, and musical know-how. Instead of watching a concert, attendees learn one well-known pop song in three-part harmony. There are no auditions, no solos, no rehearsals, and no pressure to sound pitch-perfect. If you’ve ever sung loudly in the shower and called it “practice,” you’re already qualified.

Pub Choir has built an international following through its sold-out live shows and television appearances, including “America’s Got Talent.” The format is simple but surprisingly effective. Jorgensen breaks the song into easy-to-follow vocal parts. He guides the audience step by step until hundreds of voices come together in a single performance.

The event takes place at WWW X, 13-17 Udagawacho, Shibuya-ku, and is open to guests aged 18 and over. The final performance will be professionally filmed, adding to Pub Choir’s growing collection of large-scale community singalongs shared with audiences around the world.

No musical background is required, and preparation isn’t necessary. Just bring your voice, a willingness to sing with strangers. Borrow a little confidence borrowed from the person standing next to you.
