Sekijima Hisako Basketry Solo Exhibition

Nov 14, 2026 at 11:00am ~ Mar 22, 2027 at 6:00pm

Approaching basketry from an analytical perspective, Sekijima Hisako explores the structural principles of interlacing, specifically of material, construction method, and form. Her works are filled with the sense of wonder that accompanies discovery and allow viewers to experience the joy of thinking itself.

A few highlights of Sekijima’s career:
After moving to New York, U.S. in the 1970s, she was immersed in the attitudes towards American crafts. An attitude of re-examining traditional techniques and transforming them into expressive tools.

Upon returning to Japan, she examined the Japanese Folk tools. This led her to analyze baskets from around the world, further deepening her understanding of the principles of basketry.
