Google Store Omotesando: Google’s First Flagship Outside the U.S. Opens in Tokyo
Google opens its first walk-in store anywhere outside the U.S., right in Apple's backyard.
Google opened its first office outside the United States in Tokyo back in 2001. Twenty-five years later, Google Store Omotesando, the company’s first flagship retail shop outside the U.S., opened its doors on August 13.
Three Floors, One Very Zoomed-In Camera
Google Store Omotesando spreads across three floors of Tokyu Plaza Omotesando, the Omokado complex, located in the heart of Harajuku. The basement level covers repairs and troubleshooting for Pixel phones. The first floor sells the full hardware lineup: Pixel smartphones, Nest devices, Fitbit trackers and accessories.
Head to the second floor and staff will show off the Pixel 11 Pro camera: a display that enlarges a photo up to 120 times, sharp enough to catch the expression on a dog’s face mid-walk. It is a spec sheet turned into a photo op.
Why Omotesando, Of All Places
The address puts Google alongside Apple and Samsung stores that have already been operating. Omotesando’s zelkova-lined trees have long served as Tokyo’s testing ground for flagship retail. Google said the location gives it more chances to talk with customers directly, rather than routing every sale through a carrier like Rakuten or Softbank.
A Pixel Push for the Japanese Market
“We warmly invite all of you to come in, play and explore,” said Mauria Finley, vice president of Google Store, at the opening ceremony. Finley called Japan a critical market for Pixel, stating user growth has been rapid.
Workshops for new and longtime Pixel owners are already on the calendar, alongside setup help for anyone still deciding whether to switch over. Google has not confirmed further international openings, though early coverage names the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada as likely next stops.
