As anyone using public transport in Tokyo will tell you, Apple’s iPhone is already phenomenally successful in Japan. Nevertheless, so legion are the misinformed doubters claiming native phones are the bee’s knees and Apple has actually flopped, the Japanese press is currently awash with surveys showing just how well the US cellie is faring.
The most recent we’ve seen comes from publisher Impress and shows the iPhone has grabbed just over 46 percent of the Japanese smartphone market, which is a hit in anyone’s book. Still, the competition at that high end isn’t stiff, so we can expect to see more of a challenge from the likes of Google later this year. At least until Apple drops an updated iPhone around June, that is.
