Popular on Japanese social media and consistently ranking high at cosmetic stores, the Kate Lip Monster went viral for its innovative long-lasting formula and distinctive shade range. The lineup spans everything from limited-edition glittery, edgy hues to nuanced muted tones and deep, vampy colors.
When it first hit the scene, they were almost impossible to track down in stores. Now, they’re more accessible than ever. Shade 13, “Tipsy at 3:00AM,” is a milky, cool-toned pink that took the Korean internet by storm, while Shade 07, “Final Boss,” went viral in Japan as a universally flattering color. Visée Nenmaku Fake Rouge II

This lipstick from Kosé’s Visée is inspired by Japan’s “nenmaku” trend. Nenmaku, literally means “mucous membrane” in Japanese. While it sounds weird in English, it refers to the natural, slightly translucent pink nude tone of the inner lip. This line specializes in capturing that effect through carefully calibrated tones and supple, bunny-tongue, MLBB vibes. Powered up with Kosé’s original long-lasting formula, the lipstick separates into two layers after application, enhancing color payoff and wear while maintaining a fresh, dewy finish.
Cost: ¥1,540 (Price may vary)
Visée Essence Plump Balm

Formulated with oils that melt at near body temperature, this balm glides on with a luxuriously soft, almost melting texture. Nicknamed “fever lips” in Japan, it delivers a subtle warmth effect, as if the color has gently melted into the lips.
The soft balm spreads smoothly and adheres closely, achieving three effects at once: translucent color payoff, high shine and moisturizing care. The result is a plump, glossy finish with a clear, almost glassy luminosity.
Beloved for its sheer, bouncy look, it is easy to wear for both men and women. The shade Misty Fig (PK880) is especially popular among Japanese men for its understated, natural flush. Designed with lip care in mind, it enhances shine and suppleness while providing lasting hydration and a refreshing, cooling sensation.
Cost: ¥1,650 (Price may vary)
OPERA Lip Tint

Designed to look as though your lips are naturally flushed from within, OPERA Lip Tint is known for its signature “sheer glow” finish. The formula dissolves pigment into a highly transparent oil base, allowing color to bloom softly, as if seeping up from beneath the surface rather than sitting heavily on top. The result is luminous and fresh, never opaque or overly bold.
As it tints, it also imparts a dewy, hydrated shine, creating lips that feel pure, juicy and effortlessly polished. Layer it to build depth, or keep it light for a barely-there wash of color.
The tint has also gained viral attention overseas, with several K-pop stars naming it as a personal favorite, further cementing its cult status beyond Japan.
Cost: ¥1,760 (Price may vary)

Depa-Kosu and Dora-Kosu
In Japan, cosmetics are often grouped into distinct retail categories.
Depa-kosu, short for “department cosmetics”, refers to high-end brands sold at department store beauty counters, such as NARS, Cosme Decorté, SUQQU, Shiseido, Clé de Peau Beauté and RMK. These lines are typically positioned as prestige, with dedicated beauty advisors and premium pricing.
At the opposite end of the spectrum is puchi-pura, short for “petite price,” referring to affordable cosmetics. Closely related is dora-kosu, or drugstore cosmetics. While dora-kosu and puchi-pura often overlap, they are not identical. Some puchi-pura brands are available only at what Japan calls “variety stores” like Loft, rather than at pharmacies.
Today, however, those boundaries are increasingly blurred. Major drugstores such as Matsumoto Kiyoshi now stock K-beauty labels and even mid-range brands like Elégance Paris and Maquilllage.
