A Royal Night Out

Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret escapes the palace for a mild night out

This mildly diverting exercise in speculative history posits that on V-E Day in 1945, Princesses Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon, way too good-looking) and Margaret (Bel Powley) escaped the dreariness of Buckingham Palace and had a night on the town with the (sniff) commoners, notably one hunky soldier (Jack Reynor).

There’s nothing particularly wrong with this frothy costume romp from Julian Jarrold (Kinky Boots), but while it’s charming for those on its wavelength, it’s more mild than wild, and becomes increasingly contrived as the night rolls on. I heard the Queen was not amused. Neither was I. Japanese title: Royal Night Eigoku Oujo no himitsu no gaishutsu(97 min)
