Meanwhile in the gaming world, Nintendo has taken the unusual step of actually going on record to say that it’s already developing a successor to its most popular piece of hardware, the DS handheld gamer. Ninty prez Satoru Iwata recently told the Asahi Shimbun that the next-generation DS will have twice the resolution of the current model, opening it up to a spot of high-definition gaming action.

On top of the extra pixels, Iwata has also instructed his engineers to build in a motion sensor of the sort that’s currently making gaming on the iPhone a genuine threat to the DS’s hegemony. There’s no word on a launch date and name, but we’re guessing fall 2011 and DS HD, respectively. Go on, Mario – prove us wrong.
