National Treasure, Seated Figure of Chogen, Kamakura era. From Todaiji

The Great Buddha of Todai-ji temple in Nara is one of Japan’s best-known attractions, but who can remember the first thing about it except its size? A new exhibit provides a chance to learn about the giant statue, built in the 8th century by Emperor Shomu and Empress Komyo as an offering of peace. With sculptures, votive objects and masks, this exhibit tells the story of the Great Buddha’s construction and the deities who, according to legend, manifested themselves as priests to support the project.
