Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning
Pure, simple—and pretentious—trash

The UniSol franchise, if you don’t know, involves genetically modified super soldiers raging against their government makers. Their near-invincibility translates into longer, more violent and gorier getting-hit-in-the-head scenes. This umpteenth installment brings back Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren for glorified cameos, with most of the heavy hitting (and slicing, dicing, kicking, punching, hacking, and beheading) done by Brit Scott Adkins. This is trash, pure and simple. Director John Hyams cites as his influences David Cronenberg, Gaspar Noe and Michael Haneke, so make that pretentious trash.
