Tokyo Weather in November
November is when autumn settles in properly. Early in the month, daytime highs sit around 18-19°C (mid-60s°F). By the final week, they drop to about 15°C (59°F), and nights fall to around 7°C (45°F).
It is also one of the calmer months of the year. Rain falls on fewer days than in October, and typhoons are rare by this point in the year.
The days are short, though. Some gardens and shrines close before sunset, so it helps to plan daytime visits early.
The Japan Meteorological Agency’s latest three-month outlook leans toward a warmer and wetter November than usual for the Kanto region.
Quick stats:
- Average high: ~17°C (62°F) | Average low: ~9°C (48°F)
- Rainfall: ~96 mm (3.8 in), less than half of October’s total
- Humidity: ~64%
- Sunshine: about 150 hours, more than October
- Daylight: sunset moves from about 4:46 p.m. on November 1 to roughly 4:28 p.m. by November 30
What to Wear in Tokyo in November
The month starts mild and ends cold, so plan for a wide range. Layers still work best, especially with heated trains and shops. A warmer outer layer becomes important for evenings out.
Early November (1-10): Long sleeves with a light jacket cover most days. Evenings can feel cool, so a cardigan or thin knit is useful.
Mid-November (11-20): A sweater and a medium-weight jacket or trench coat suit most outings.
Late November (21-30): Lows near 7°C (45°F) call for a proper coat at night. A scarf helps for evening light-ups and outdoor markets。

Seasonal Events in November
November brings two national holidays, a long weekend, lucky-charm fairs, a children’s rite of passage and peak foliage in the city.
Culture Day

Meiji Jingu holds its autumn grand festival from November 1-3. The program traditionally includes yabusame (horseback archery).
Note that the shrine’s November gates close at 4:10 p.m., earlier than sunset.
Tori no Ichi

The best-known fair is at Otori Shrine and Chokokuji Temple in Asakusa’s Senzoku area. It runs for 24 hours from midnight on each date. Stalls sell kumade (decorated bamboo rakes), which are said to “rake in” good fortune for the year ahead.
Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku also hosts a fair on both dates. For Otori Shrine, Iriya and Minowa stations on the Hibiya Line are closer than Asakusa Station.
Shichi-Go-San

The customary date is November 15, which falls on a Sunday this year. Shrines are especially busy on the weekends around it. If photographing families in kimono, ask permission first.
Labor Thanksgiving Day

Kinro Kansha no Hi (Labor Thanksgiving Day) on Monday, November 23, creates a three-day weekend from November 21-23. Popular foliage spots and trains out of the city tend to be busier than usual.
Meiji Jingu marks the day with Niinamesai, a harvest rite. The same weekend, the Hachioji Ginkgo Festival runs November 21-22 in western Tokyo.
Autumn Foliage

Koyo (autumn leaf viewing) reaches central Tokyo this month. On long-term averages, the city’s ginkgo trees turn yellow around November 23, with maples following around November 28.
The ginkgo avenue at Meiji Jingu Gaien remains one of the city’s best-known spots. No 2026 dates have yet been announced for its evening light-up, which ran November 22-30 last year.

Illuminations & Christmas Markets

Winter light displays start switching on in mid-November across Marunouchi, Roppongi and Tokyo Dome City. Christmas markets follow later in the month.
The Tokyo Christmas Market moves to Shin-Toyosu this year, opening November 20. A second site at Shiba Park, near Tokyo Tower, opens December 4.
