A 900-year-old shrine festival with a wild centerpiece: bearers in loincloths carrying a mikoshi straight into the sea off Enoshima. Crowds line the beach as the portable shrine is plunged into the surf, carrying out a purification ritual that doubles as one of the most photogenic summer scenes in Kanagawa.
