August closes with Tokyo’s greatest dance party. For its 67th edition, around 10,000 dancers in yukata and straw amigasa hats parade through the streets of Koenji in tightly choreographed ren (troupes), driven by shamisen, flutes and relentless taiko. The atmosphere is electric, the street food is excellent, and the whole neighborhood turns out — a perfect send-off to a packed summer month.
