Yuzuki’s “Samutai” Brings Painting and Film Together at biscuit gallery

biscuit gallery in Shinjuku hosts “Samutai,” a solo exhibition by artist Yuzuki, growing out of a collaboration with French filmmaker Victor Boccard and his project Moongirl. Working from the film’s script, Yuzuki has produced fifteen paintings in size 30 (a standard Japanese canvas format, roughly 910 by 727 millimeters), all presented together for the first time.
The gallery folds in digest footage and music from the film itself, so the paintings and the world they were drawn from start to blur into one another. Moongirl doesn’t have a release date yet, but “Samutai” lets visitors step into its story ahead of the film — the exhibition arriving before the movie it was made for.
Though every piece began as part of the film’s world, none of them reads as a simple illustration. Each stands as its own painting, carrying the story’s emotional weight, its sense of time, and the traces of memory running through it. It’s a chance to watch a film’s imagined world and a painter’s response to it meet in the same room.
