The year 2012 is going to be huge for blockbuster re-releases in 3D. James Cameron will bring back his epic Titanic to theaters in April 2012 to mark the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking in icy Atlantic waters. Titanic, which had its world premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 1997, was the highest-grossing film of all time until it was surpassed by Cameron’s Avatar this year. The Hollywood Reporter said conversion of the film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, will cost up to $15 million. Meanwhile, George Lucas has already announced that all six films in his Star Wars saga will be converted into 3D and rereleased theatrically in 2012. Lucas’ company Industrial Light & Magic is supervising the conversion process, which its website claims will be “cutting edge.”
