It will come as a shock to no one that the premier fetish event in Asia takes place in Tokyo. The Japan Fetish Ball, put on by Tokyo Kink Society, encompasses all aspects of fetish culture. What may come as something of a surprise is that JFB is not about sex—rather, the event focuses on avant-garde art and performance, and promotes an anti-hierarchal, nonprofit ethos. “We don’t charge the shops at all to sell their wares,” says main organizer Charm. “We’re interested in independent, interesting proprietors.” The same could be said of the artists. This year’s event features aerial dancer Asagi Ageha as well as avant-garde ikebana performance artist Yuji Ueno. One key point: no streetwear is allowed in the party. You must come in cosplay, S&M, bondage, or other fantasy dress. For those not equipped, clothes can be purchased at the entrance.
