Following the debut of his first work in English at last fall’s Festival/Tokyo, emerging playwright Shu Matsui presents a new piece to be performed with English subtitles. Where 2009’s Ano Hito no Sekai (“That Man’s World”) looked at the concepts of “self” and “other” through the portrayal of a cult religion, Jiman no Musuko (“Favorite Son”) ponders “self” and “nationality” by following a mother and her son, who becomes king of a fictional country. The piece features actors from Matsui’s Sample company and will be staged with subtitles at the matinee performance on September 20.
