Long before Pina Bausch’s sudden 2009 death from cancer, German award-winning director Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire; Paris, Texas; Faraway, So Close!) had wanted to make a film about her unnerving dance creations. He says he didn’t hit on the right vehicle for telling a dance story, however, until he got a hold of 3D technology. The result is an spellbinding journey of sound, music and movement onto the stage of the German choreographer’s famously controversial dance works, and out into the city of Wuppertal, which for 35 years was the home of her creative activity. Though the subtitles are in Japanese, you will lose very little if you can’t read them.
Showing at Yurakucho Human Trust Cinema and Shinjuku Wald 9. In French, German, Russian, etc. with Japanese subtitles.
