A prominent member of Italy’s Transavanguardia movement, Sandro Chia presents “Romantic Bucolic,” a series of works dedicated to the relationship between art and country life. Some 50 drawings, an oil canvas and video installation were inspired by the iconic landscape of Tuscany, where Chia lives and works as an artist and wine producer. Transavanguardia was the Italian iteration of neo-expressionism, through which artists emerging in the ’70s and ’80s rejected conceptualism and sought to reintroduce emotion into painting and sculpture. The show takes place as part of the Italy in Japan 2009 program.
