The use of shadows has been a key element in art since ancient times, but a comprehensive examination of the theme is difficult because techniques vary widely from era to era. The National Museums of Art—a grouping of five of Japan’s most important art institutions—take up the challenge with a show that runs the gamut from early modern Western art to Japanese and foreign contemporary art. Among the 173 works are important pieces from Monet, Duchamp, Alexander Rodchenko and Kaii Higashiyama.
