Ten years ago, three expats from Ghana, Australia and New Zealand opened Two Rooms Grill | Bar on the fifth floor of Omotesando’s AO Building. A refined ambiance, superb food and walk-in wine cellar of over 1,800 bottles makes Two Rooms the go-to spot for an exquisite night out in Tokyo.
The restaurant’s upscale interior reflects the neighborhood in which it stands. Floor to ceiling windows encase each room, offering a panoramic view of Aoyama’s skyscrapers and city lights. An impressive open kitchen greets guests in the main dining room. Across a glass-paned bridge is the 54-seat bar and lounge, which leads to an outdoor terrace.
Chef Matthew Crabbe trained across the globe and was the executive chef of Hyatt Regency Kyoto before opening Two Rooms with partners Edward Baffoe and Nathan Smith in 2009. In addition to an a la carte menu featuring oysters, prime steak and seafood, Crabbe designs different tasting menus for every season, complete with wine and cocktail pairings.
The new tasting menu titled “TR|10” features seasonal Japanese ingredients that deliver playful textures and stunning flavors. The onsen tamago (poached egg) with bacon dust, whipped avocado and yuzu-pepper consommé is beautifully rich and refreshing. In another triumph, Crabbe transforms the commonplace donburi (rice bowl dish) into a lavish treat with shochu-pickled ikura and chopped wagyu beef toppings.
While the savory portion of the meal is excellent, the desserts are otherworldly. In particular, the takesumi (bamboo charcoal) ice-cream with sakura and lemon curd, paired with a glass of Riesling Auslese, is nothing short of heavenly. After enjoying a delicious meal, guests can cross over to the bar and mingle over a nightcap while gazing at the skyline.
Two Rooms guarantees an elevated experience through its impeccable menus, attentive service and elegant atmosphere. A decade since opening, the restaurant continues to uphold its reputation as a must-visit destination for expats and locals alike.
