Joshua Helius Solo Exibition: Tender Ruin

Jun 04, 2026 at 7:00pm ~ Jul 01, 2026 at 12:00am

HVEN Gallery is pleased to present Tender Ruin, a solo exhibition by Tokyo-based photographer Joshua Helius.

Centered around the photographic series Tender Ruin, the exhibition explores themes of preservation, fracture, and release. By encasing flowers in ice, Joshua creates temporary states of suspension that reflect on the fragile desire to preserve beauty, emotion, and human connection against the inevitability of change.

What began as a personal meditation on acceptance gradually evolved into a broader exploration of fear: fear of loss, fear of loneliness, and the impulse to hold onto what ultimately cannot be controlled. As the frozen forms expand and crack, the works reveal the paradox at the center of the series: in attempting to protect something too tightly, we may ultimately suffocate it.

The fractures forming within the ice become metaphors for the tension between care and control, preservation and destruction. Through subtle shifts in texture, light, and perspective, the exhibition considers how attachment can quietly alter the very things we hope to keep intact.

For this solo presentation, Joshua reflects on the delicate space between holding on and letting go, proposing that true preservation may not lie in resisting change but in allowing things to transform, fade, and eventually disappear naturally.

The exhibition opening will take place as an intimate evening gathering featuring a special cocktail inspired by the themes and atmosphere of the exhibition, alongside DJ sets by image-makers and photographers Mikito, Matthew Sommers, ARAMONZTER, and Manual. Extending the exhibition into a social and atmospheric setting, the evening offers visitors an opportunity to experience the work while meeting the artist in person.

About the artist

Born in the Philippines and raised in Japan, Joshua’s multicultural perspective shapes the way he interprets emotion, memory, and human relationships. Working across fashion and art photography, his visual language has been deeply influenced by a lifelong proximity to water:  through time spent living around ships, rivers, and the ocean, as well as exposure to his family’s water-related business. The fluidity, instability, and transformative qualities of water continue to inform his practice, alongside an ongoing sensitivity to darkness, light, and impermanence.
