The rooftop garden at MoN Takanawa explores how growing food can preserve knowledge, strengthen communities and support urban biodiversity

A seed planting event in Tokyo! Cities cover just a small share of the Earth’s land surface, yet they continue to shape how people interact with nature. Rooftop gardens are one way to introduce more green space into dense urban areas. This creates opportunities for education, biodiversity and community involvement.

MoN Farm is a rooftop vegetable garden at MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives. The project is part of a broader initiative to collect, preserve and pass on agricultural knowledge for future generations. Rather than focusing only on growing vegetables, the garden operates as a “living archive,”. Enjoy documenting the skills, techniques and relationships that connect people with the natural world.

Several organizations contribute to the project. SynecO Inc. supports the development of what the partners describe as an “extended ecosystem”. Mitosaya Herb Garden Distillery brings its experience exploring the relationship between plants and people. Nearby, TAKANAWA HOP WAY works with local businesses, schools and residents around Takanawa Gateway Station to cultivate hops as a community.

Together, these initiatives transform part of Takanawa into a space for experimenting with urban ecology and community-led agriculture. The result is less about producing a bumper crop of vegetables and more about asking what a city can grow when people, knowledge and nature share the same plot of land.
