Motofumi Yamaguchi, artistic director of the renowned Kodo taiko group, steps outside the drum circle to showcase his talents on the makobue flute. The name of his band is taken from an old adage that praises the simple life: “One pole and the presence of nature.” In this case, the ikkan is a flute instead of a fishing rod, but the sentiment remains the same. Yamaguchi, pianist Akira Nino and guitarist Takafumi Imaizumi seek to distill their instruments into their most basic expressions.
