Tokyo gets a rare peak at the Afro-Uruguayan music form candombe when singer, poet and composer Eduardo Daniel Saraiva arrives for a series of performances with Japanese tango singer “Minami.” “Candombe” originally referred to self-help dance societies founded by former African slaves in the capital Montevideo, but later became known as the signature music of Uruguay. Saraiva is a specialist not only in candombe but also tango and other folkloric styles of Uruguayan music. For those keen to dig deeper, he and Minami will be offering singing classes at Spain’s Cervantes Center in Ichigaya.
