The Oji Fox Parade
Dec 31, 2024 at 10:00am ~ Jan 01, 2025 at 6:00am
According to legend, foxes (messengers of the deity Inari) once gathered at Oji to visit the local shrine. Today, people don fox masks and join the parade that winds through the northern Tokyo neighborhood. It’s a lively blend of old Edo mysticism and modern-day revelry. At midnight, everyone gathers at Oji Inari Shrine to welcome the New Year, guided by flickering lanterns representing fox fire and playful spirits. This scene was famously depicted by ukiyo-e master Utagawa Hiroshige in his work “New Year’s Eve Foxfires at the Changing Tree, Oji.”
