Japan’s oldest continuous art exhibition returns to the home that was built with it in mind. The National Art Center, Tokyo is one of the largest museums in the world without a permanent collection, and the expansive annual Nitten show is part of the reason for that. Launched in 1907, the exhibition underwent various shifts in name—indicating different degrees of government control—before going independent after WWII. The show presents literally thousands of works that reflect the current state of Japanese art, divided into yoga (Western painting) and nihonga (Japanese painting) categories, along with sculpture, crafts and calligraphy.
