Following his work with the Kodo drum troupe and other genre-busting collaborations, kabuki giant Tamasaburo Bando takes on the ancient Chinese opera The Peony Pavilion. Originally written during the Ming Dynasty and recently adapted for the Shanghai Expo, “China’s Romeo and Juliet” tells the story of Du Liniang, the daughter of a high official, who goes to sleep in a garden and dreams of falling in love with a young scholar. Kabuki aficionados will not be surprised to learn that the beautiful Du is played by the 60-year-old Bando.
